It is that time again! We are back with another Supporters Spotlight. After checking in with the San Diego supporters, we are back in LA to catch up with Angel City Supporters Group Mosaic1781.

How and when did the group come into existence? What made you all want to start the group?

Mosaic 1781 started on the day Angel City was announced by a group of 18 like-minded and empowered LA Latinas that did not know each other. Each one of the 18 individuals was hungry to support women soccer in our beloved community, but did not know how. Each one of us was talking or texting the other kind of like a game of telephone. Next thing you know, one person made a chat with 18 women interested in supporting the new LA women soccer team. We didn’t know each other prior to this moment, but we soon learned we had so much in common. After much discussion, we decided to birth a supporter group that represents the diverse community of Los Angeles County. Mosaic 1781 was born out of our desire to create a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment that represents the melting pot that is Los Angeles.

Can you share some information about the group structure? Are there roles/committees, etc.? If so, what is your role?

Mosaic 1781 is governed by a Board of Directors that manages day-to-day items of the group, but is community driven. As such, the Board of Directors are in constant communication with Mosaic 1781 members for their opinions, and represent their desires with the front office and collective of supporter groups. The driving principle of Mosaic 1781 is its mission statement, which declares that our mission is to support the Los Angeles NWSL team, both on and off the field through the passion that unites us all, soccer. Anyone who is interested in helping with the management of the supporter group is welcomed to help. Everyone is involved with active support on game days.

Could you give a little more info about the group (Mission statement, goals, values, etc.)?

Yes! Mosaic 1781’s mission is to support the Los Angeles NWSL team, both on and off the field through the passion that unites us all, soccer. Los Angeles is a diverse melting pot of ethnicities, cultures, religions, sexual orientations, and genders. Mosaic 1781 strives to be inclusive and respect all those that contribute to the success of the Greater Los Angeles areas and make the city a mosaic of diversity. Our supporters stand for the empowerment of all women and commit to fight against racism, homophobia and xenophobia in order to promote a welcoming family environment.

There has been a push to bring a women’s soccer team to LA for quite some time. What does it mean to members of the group to not only have a team, but have a team with this level of thought and investment in it?

Access. Visibility. Representation. Mosaic 1781 was founded with the belief that soccer can be a mechanism to create social change. Having a women soccer team in Los Angeles is a tool to help empower individuals through representation. Importantly, it allows us to live out our dream of watching incredible athletes playing the sport we love. For many of our founders and members, soccer was commonly a “men sport,” and we were often excluded. Now, we get to watch and cheer for women who look like us, work like us and are driven like us.

What do you and/or the members of the group love most about the team?

The team has its heart in the community. Mosaic 1781 has been a strong advocate and partner from day one for more diversity, and all around representation of the LA community within the team, marketing and imaging of the team. We love the way the team is becoming a reflection of the LA community.

What do you love most about being in an Supporters Group?

Without a doubt, the community. Everyone is very friendly, supportive and loving. We share the high’s and low’s together, and we have tons of fun doing it!

Where can people find you before games and how do they join you during the game?

Please feel free to join us on Christmas Tree Lane before weekend games for our official tailgates. We can also be found in Section 103 during the games. The easiest way to spot us is by finding our big sol rosa, gray, and white flag made out of bandanas! Everyone (all ages) is welcome to hang out with us. Our youngest member is only two years old! You can find him waiving his little flag too!

Be sure to check out Mosaic 1781 at Angel City home matches during the 2023 season! (I believe some members have traveled to Chicago for the last game of the season which is tonight at 6pm ET, 3pm PT; say hello if you see them!)
