NWSL Abroad Weeks 6 and 7

It was another exciting week in the W-League. Some of your NWSL favorites played a big part in their teams successes over the last two weeks. Here’s your catch up info!

Week 6

Western Sydney Wanderers 0 – 1 Perth Glory

Sam Kerr scored the lone goal to lift Perth to a 1-0 victory against Western Sydney. Rachel Hill assisted on the goal. Kerr and Hill have been excellent this season and have been top performers for Perth. Amanda Frisbie, and Raquel Rodriguez also started for Perth while Nikki Stanton returned to action for the first time since breaking her arm in a match earlier in the season. Lo’eau LaBonta started for Western Sydney.

Sydney FC 2 – 0 Melbourne Victory

Former NWSL forward Lisa De Vanna picked up a goal and an assist as Sydney defeated the Victory by a score of 2-0. Aubrey Bledsoe got her first start for Sydney and made four saves to earn the shutout. Emily Sonnett also started for Sydney while Natasha Dowie started for Victory.

Canberra United 0 – 1 Brisbane Roar

Despite a strong five save performance by Haley Kopmeyer, Canberra could not maintain their winning streak, falling 1-0 against Brisbane. Toni Pressley and Ashleigh Sykes also started for Canberra, while Carson Pickett, Celeste Boureille and Hayley Raso all started for Brisbane.

Melbourne City 1 – 1 Adelaide United

Ashley Hatch and Alyssa Mautz scored a goal apiece to earn a 1-1 draw between Melbourne City and Adelaide. Hatch’s placed a great header from point blank range over the head of the goalkeeper to give City the lead in the 14th minute. Alyssa Mautz helped earn the draw though on a rare goal as she put a well placed ball in the bottom left corner of the net in the 73rd minute. Former Boston Breaker Kyah Simon had a chance to steal the win for City late in t he game but missed on a penalty opportunity. Lydia Williams, Alanna Kennedy, Lauren Barnes, Steph Catley, Jessica Fishlock and Larissa Crummer also started for City, while Danielle Colaprico and Makenzy Doniak started for Adelaide.

Week 7

Melbourne Victory 4 – 0 Adelaide United

Natasha Dowie scored a brace and picked up an assist in the Victory’s impressive 4-0 win over Adelaide. Dowie put the Victory up early netting the game’s first goal in the 11th minute before assisting on a goal by former WNY Flash player Jeon Ga-Eul in the 33rd. Dowie scored her second of the match in similar fashion as her first early in the second half and gave an all around strong performance. Danielle Colaprico, Alyssa Mautz and Makenzy Doniak all started for Adelaide.

Western Sydney Wanderers 1 – 3 Sydney FC

There wasn’t much action from the current NWSL roster in this match up, but former NWSL players Ellie Brush and Lisa De Vanna both contributed and had solid games for their respective teams. Aubrey Bledsoe only allowed one goal to help preserve Sydney’s win. Lo’eau LaBonta started for Western Sydney while Emily Sonnett started for Sydney.

Melbourne City 2 – 1 Canberra United

Jessica Fishlock scored both goals for City in their 2-1 win over Canberra. Fishlock started the scoring in the 20th minute with a blast from outside the box. Canberra would level three minutes later, but Fishlock came through again and sealed the victory for City as she produced the game winner in the 80th minute. Ashley Hatch, Steph Catley and Lauren Barnes put in excellent performances for City, while after a fairly quiet week, Toni Pressley put in another solid performance for Canberra. Lydia Williams and Alanna Kennedy started for City, while Haley Kopmeyer also started for Canberra.

Brisbane Roar 0 – 3 Newcastle Jets

Arin Gilliland scored an impressive hat trick as Newcastle shut Brisbane out by a score of 3-0. All three goals came in the first half and occurred in a fairly similar manner with Gilliland blasting all three goals right footed from the center of the box. Gilliland had been having a fairly quiet W-League season thus far but really stepped it up a notch against Brisbane. Britt Eckerstrom picked up the shutout win for Newcastle while Tori Huster and Katie Stengel also started. Carson Pickett, Celeste Boureille and Hayley Raso started for Brisbane.
